Watched by an instructor, Blossom carries Rachael over a jump.

aboard a pony and rode it
at an area riding school.
When it became apparent
that Rachael was interest-
ed in doing more than just
riding for pleasure, she
started taking lessons.
Rachael began working
with Bloomfield Open
Hunt Club trainer
Heather Irvine in January
1992 and the two have
become good friends in
addition to developing a
productive teacher/student
relationship.
"Rachael is the youngest
rider I've ever coached,"
said Irvine, who has been
a trainer for 14 years, the
last 12 at Bloomfield Open
Hunt.
"She's very bright and
very talented. Even
though she's only 8, she's
caught on to a lot. She's
come a long way, and she'll
continue to get better
because she loves the sport
so much.
"Her parents have been
an enormous help because
of their support, and
Rachael has a great pony
to work with. Blossom is
an older pony (she's 17)
who has won national
awards. She's a good, safe
ride. They work well
together. When a rider
wants to do more, a pony
wants to do more."
Rachael has been riding
and taking care of Blossom
for a little over a year.
Mrs. Herkowitz is
pleased with Bloomfield
Open Hunt, which hosts
the prestigious Motor City
and Detroit Horse Shows
each summer.
"Their concern for the
animals at the club is
incredible and I like the
philosophy that winning
isn't everything at

Rachael's age," Mrs.
Herkowitz said.
"As a parent, you can't
help but worry when you
watch your 8-year-old
child jump over a fence
with a pony, but I feel very
safe with Rachael in their
hands."
Rachael has fallen rid-
ing Blossom but she's got-
ten back up every time.

"Riding has given
Rachael
self-esteem and a
sense of herself."

Janis Herkowitz

Rachael, who will be a
fourth-grader at Pine Lake
Elementary School in
Bloomfield Hills this fall,
has a one-word description
for the sport: "Fun."
"I really like jumping
and I like taking care of
my pony, especially feed-
ing her carrots and
apples," Rachael ex-
plained. "One day, I hope
to ride in the Olympics." ❑
