only school setting which
doesn't look like a school,"
Ms. Moses said.
For fall, Shir Tikvah
expects 100 students from
grades K-7. High school stu-
dents meet in each other's
homes every other week.
The congregation contin-
ues to worship at
Norminster Presbyterian
Church, so thoughts of
building a school are far
into the future at best.
"We're starting from
scratch here. There are
enormous expenses. We're
walking that very tight line.
And our first priority is to
make our program work,"
Ms. Moses said.
Temples Kol Ami and
Shir Shalom continue to
rent schools in the West
Bloomfield School District.
Kol Ami's 330 students in
grades pre-kindergarten
through 12 attend Sunday
classes at Ealy Elementary.
Once a month, grades 4-6
return to the temple for pro-
gramming. Grades 7-8 meet
each Monday at Kol Ami.
High school students may
attend classes either
Sunday or Monday.
Years ago, classes were
conducted at Hillel Day
School. Kol Ami Education
Director Elissa Berg said
Ealy is just "more conve-
nient."
Flo Bloch, education
director at Shir Shalom,
uses both the temple and
Doherty Elementary for
classes.
Monday and Wednesday
Hebrew classes meet in five
classrooms, a social hall
and the sanctuary of the
temple. On Sundays, pre-
kindergarten through
grade 5 attend classes at
Doherty, grades 6-12 at
Shir Shalom.
Ms. Bloch looked at many
school districts before set-
tling on West Bloomfield.
Some school districts do not
rent for religious program-
ming, while others charge
exorbitant rent. West
Bloomfield charges rent by
the room rather than by the
hour.
"It's still very expensive,"
Ms. Bloch said. "We rent 12
to 14 rooms at Doherty at
$18,000-$20,000 a year. But
to build would cost $100
plus each square foot."
Ms. Bloch expects 350
students in the fall. Tuition
continues to grow, and rent-
ing is not always ideal.
"We can't use the walls
for display. We cannot eat
in the classrooms. It's hard
to teach Hamotzi and not
eat or drink. It takes away
from what we're trying to
teach," Ms. Bloch said. El
