EMERGENCY HITS
NORTHERN ISRAEL
AND JNF IS THERE!

/-

recognition of God is
inappropriate.
This brings us to the third
mitzvah related to food. Each
time we begin and conclude a
meal we invoke the name of
the Lord through the recita-
tion of brachot. Some explain
brachot as a means of saying
"thank you" to God. It's tru-
ly much more.
Birkat Hamazon, the grace
s after meals, is alluded to in
his sedrah from the words,
shall eat, be satisfied,
and bless the Lord your God
`For the good land which He
has given you." (Deuteronomy
-1 3:10) Birkat Hamazon does
'begin with an acknowledge-
' ment that God is the source of
'food. But this extensive set of
t blessings discusses the
rebuilding of Jerusalem and
the coming of the Messiah.
The dinner table becomes the
le.tting for a prayer service, on
with the synagogue and
Thmple.
Our sedrah includes a
seemingly paradoxical mes-
sage regarding the role of food
.n stating that it is God "who
thee in the wilderness
Arith manna. . . that He
might afflict thee, and that
_He might prove (test) thee."
(Deuteronomy 8:16)
We normally would not
associate the gift of food as an
affliction or test. The Italian
commentator Sforno explains
that from this experience we
• learn that we must obey God
'':even while we are in the
midst of plenty. For those
among us so blessed as to
:have food in the refrigerator
'and on the table, we must live
-kip to the challenge to draw
'loser to God. When food is
=Merely the answer to an
Ianimalistic urge and not a
" - n-tiins of religious worship,
we have sunk as low as
beasts. ❑

Recent terrorist rocket attacks from the Lebanese border threaten the
entire population of northern Israel. JNF has mobilized to confront this
national emergency.

chit ren are not in shelters. JNF has Invited them to three JNF
summer cam s. The transfer and the camp program cost $500 per
child. Yet we no choice. Israel's children are the Jewish state's
ct precious resource. If our children were endangered, wouldn't
we do anything to bring them to safety?

Shelling has devastated area roads. JNF is on the job repairing these
roads. They provide access to schools, hospitals, places of employ-
ment and'major cities. They are essential to the northern towns'
survival. The cost of repairs is certain to be tremendous. Again,
do we have any other choice?

Terrorists are threatening Israel's northern communities. Your contribution
helps JNF safeguard the children and their communities.

JNF IS ALWAYS THERE WHEN IT COUNTS.
