Concern Raised
Over Synagogue

Washington (JTA) — In a
meeting here with the
visiting president of
Belarus, American Jewish
leaders expressed concern
about the condition of the
Jewish synagogue in Minsk,
the country's capital.
Belarus, known formerly
as the Soviet republic of
Byelorussia, was once the
virtual center of the "pale of
settlement" where Jews
were forced to live in the
Czarist Russian era. At its
height, the Jewish commun-
ity of Minsk boasted 120
synagogues, said Rabbi An-
drew Baker, director of Eu-
ropean affairs for the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee.
Today, there are 120,000
Jews in Belarus, of whom
30,000 to 40,000 live in Min-
sk, which has one small syn-
agogue. The Jewish com-
munity of Minsk was vir-
tually destroyed during
World War II.
President Stanislav
Shushkevich told officials
from AJCommittee and
B'nai B'rith in a meeting
last week that it was unlike-
ly the government could
return an older synagogue
now being used for other
purposes to the Jewish
community.
Rabbi Baker said he did
not find the response satis-
factory, but felt it was im-
portant that Mr.
Shushkevich heard the offi-
cials' concerns.
Mr. Shushkevich discussed
relations between his coun-
try and Israel, calling them
"wonderful." Belarus now
has a chancery in Israel, and
Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres visited the
country last year.
The president also talked
about what he called
Belarus' "history of coex-
istence" among various re-
ligious groups, and said that
his government was in the
process of abandoning
Soviet- era practices that led
to discrimination.
In addition, he voiced a
strong commitment to
Belarus becoming a non-
nuclear power. Belarus is
one of the former Soviet re-
publics with nuclear
weapons on its territory. E]
