through several stages
after initial success with
similar presentations at
the Hollywood Bowl.
"My first task was to
look at the project, see if it
was viable and come up
with a budget that would
make sense," explained
Mr. Rosenblatt, 45. "The
next phase was recruiting
a promoter who would be
interested in taking the
show across the country."
After contracting with
Concert Productions Inter-
national, Mr. Rosenblatt
worked toward getting the
tour on its feet, booking
the venues and finding the
orchestras. As the show
moves to 21 destinations,
he monitors the budget
and coordinates the differ-
ent elements.
Sometimes individual
facilities have to build
stage' extensions because
of the large number of per-
formers. Two conductors
alternate shows, with one
traveling ahead to get an
early start with the
orchestra in the next city.
Mr. Rosenblatt's interest
in the theater started in
childhood, when his father
took him to plays and
musical reviews. Although
he enjoyed high school act-
ing classes, he thought he
would take on a more prac-
tical career and study law.
While at the University
of California — Los
Angeles, he changed his
focus and earned a bache-
lor's degree in theater arts
and a master's degree in
fine arts, with a concentra-
tion in directing.
"I began teaching in col-
lege in the Los Angeles
area when the
Nederlanders were con-
verting the Pantages
Theatre in Hollywood from
a movie theater to a
Broadway-style house," he
recalled.
"A friend of mine was
brought in to open the the-
ater, and he asked if I
would be interested in
helping him out for a cou-
ple of weeks. That couple
of weeks grew into a cou-
ple of years, and then they
moved me around the
country."
After being operations
manager at the Poplar
Creek Music Theatre in
Chicago, the Wilshire
Theatre in Beverly Hills
and the Wang Center for
the Performing Arts in
Boston, he was asked to
direct at Disney, later
becoming senior project
manager for Disneyland
Entertainment.
Mr. Rosenblatt has coor-

dinated the production of
numerous Disney events
since joining the company
in 1989. These include
Disneyland Beach Party
Shows, the Great Race (a
touring spectacle of vin-
tage cars) and New Year's
Eve -at Disneyland.
Mr. Rosenblatt sees no
major differences between
productions directed
toward adults and those
aimed at children.

"It all has to be
entertaining with
a good story that
moves along."

"I have a very strong
philosophy that good the-
ater is good theater, and
while there are certain
themes that sometimes
dictate they may not be for
children, exciting theater
is going to cross-over," he
said. "It all has to be
entertaining with a good
story that moves along."
Mr. Rosehblatt, who
lives in California, has fun
taking side jobs as a direc-
tor or actor during his
hours off from Disney and
even being in a theater
audience. During a recent
week-long trip to New
York in conjunction with
the Symphonic Fantasy
performance in the city, he
went to nine plays.
"When my son is with
me, I love to use him as an
excuse to go to children's
theater," he confessed.
"What will bore him will
bore me, and what in all
likelihood will excite him
will excite me."
His 6-year-old son,
Aaron, also has been a
motivation for him to
explore his Jewish roots.
Jewish tradition, he says,
is "something I hope to
pass along to my son."
Disney's Symphonic
Fantasy will be performed
at 7:30 p.m. this evening
and tomorrow at 3 p.m.
and 7:30 p.m. at the
Pine Knob Music Theater.
