Mother Remembers
Daughter's Life

CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ LOCAL COLUMNIST

Jennifer
Mellen died at age 19,
her mother, Barbara
Mellen decided to

celebrate her daughter's life
by publishing the book She
Walks in Beauty. The book
contains Jennifer's creative
writing. It also captures the
warm and loving relation-
ship between mother and
daughter through the letters
they shared. Barbara Mellen
included poems to her
daughter and writings from
Jennifer's friends.
"This book is a passionate
love story, the love of a
mother for the daughter she
lost. It is a lyrically beau-
tiful affirmation of the value
of life in the face of death. No
reader can help but be in-
spired," said Rabbi Sher-
win T. Wine. This quote ap-
pears on the back of the
book. On the cover is a
photograph of Jennifer in
Israel. Her mother says that
this was a happy trip and
that Jennifer felt strongly
about Israel.
"I wanted her to be re-
m e mb ered," said her
mother. "It was the last
thing I could do for her."
Barbara Mellen and her
husband John established
the Jennifer Lynn Mellen
Creative Writing Contest at
Andover High School.
