After receiving smicha
(ordination) at Oholei
Torah-Lubavitch, Rabbi
Polter returned to Detroit,
where he began working
with the Jewish communi-
ties of Birmingham-
Bloomfield Hills.
The first Birmingham-
Bloomfield Hills minyan
started meeting once a
month in 1985. Four years
ago, that expanded to twice
a month, with davening at
private homes.
Then in 1991 Rabbi
Polter began working with
what is known now as the
Birmingham-Bloomfield
Hills synagogue. Today, ser-
vices are held every
Shabbat at the Birmingham
Masonic Temple.
It hasn't always been easy
just finding Jews in the
area, Rabbi Polter admitted.
Though a number of fami-
lies interested in Judaism
live there today,
Birmingham-Bloomfield
Hills hardly has served as a
center of Jewish life in
metro Detroit. And other
than Rabbi Polter's syna-
gogue, Temple Beth El is
the only congregation in the
area.
Rabbi Polter says he does
meet with indifference. But
he keeps calling and knock-
ing anyway.
"Someone may close the
door 20 times in your face,"
he said. "I don't intrude or
nudge. It's just a matter of
presenting the right idea."
Among those ideas are a
bagel breakfast for profes-
sionals in the Birmingham
business district, a Torah
tutorial program (which
includes lessons via the tele-
phone) and the story hour,
all of which Rabbi Polter
conducts.
Rabbi Polter and his wife
plan each activity for the
storytelling group, where
one especially popular game
is "Who Am I?" Children
each receive an index card

with the name of someone
famous; then others have to
guess who he or she is by
asking questions: "Are you a
man or a woman?" "Are you
still alive?"
Participants in the
Birmingham Jewish
Children's Story Group
come from Reform,
Conservative and Orthodox
families, Rabbi Polter said.
"What they all have in corn-
mon is that their parents
feel strongly that they have
a Jewish education." El

Military Court
Disciplines Three

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Three
Israeli reserve soldiers who
drove their army jeep across
the Allenby Bridge into Jor-
dan, where they were de-
tained and later returned to
Israel, have been disciplined
by a military court after
claiming dubiously that they
were lost.
The three reservists, on
duty in the Jericho area,
drove the jeep across the
Allenby Bridge but were
halted and detained by Jor-
danian army troops.
They were returned,
together with the vehicle
and their equipment, in-
cluding weapons and army
identification papers, a cou-
ple of hours after interroga-
tion.
Back in Israel, the three
soldiers — a lieutenant and
two privates — were again
detained, this time by Israel
Defense Force military
police.
One of the men was
sentenced to 21 days' deten-
tion in the stockade, another
to a 14 days' detention, and
the last to a suspended 14-day
detention. 0
