hanks in part to a
series of grants from
the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban
Development, Jewish Fed-
eration Apartments resi-
dents soon will have the
option of receiving house-
keeping services.
Starting next week,
housekeepers from Allen
Home Care, Inc., in
Southfield, will provide ser-
vices twice a month for resi-
dents in both West
Bloomfield and Oak Park
Federation Apartment
units.
"The purpose of this pro-
gram is to allow the frail
elderly to stay in their
apartments instead of mov-
ing to a more structured liv-
ing situation," said Diane
Sasson, director of commu-
nity relations for Allen
Home Care.
The idea of providing
individual cleaning services
was addressed when the
Federation Apartments
board of directors began to
examine the aging of its
longtime residents, said
Marsha Goldsmith, Jewish
Federation Apartments
executive director.
"There are those seniors
who moved in 10 or 20
years ago who are now that
much older and need help
with their apartments," she
said. "They can take care of
themselves, but still need a
little extra help. This is an
opportunity for people to
stay in their apartments

Beginning September,
those residents determined
to be frail elderly, according
to government standards,
will be eligible for subsidies
toward housekeeping.
Although the federal
subsidies will not kick in
until the end of September,
about 85-90 apartments are
already signed up for clean-
ing services.
Housekeeping
services start in
September.
Seniors who want their
apartments cleaned will be
charged $10 for light house-
keeping and $20 for heavy
housekeeping each time, of
which they will be responsi-
ble for a small part, Ms.
Goldsmith said.
In addition, a recently
approved HUD matching
grant totaling $1.5 million
has allowed Federation
Apartments to increase its
number of vans from one to
three, and offer residents
two optional weekend
meals.
HUD will grant $589,000
annually for the next five
years. Federation
Apartments will use exist-
ing monies for services, and
endowment interest and
contributions from United
Hebrew Schools' van service
for its portion of the match-
ing grants. ❑
Supreme Court Blocks
NY School Ruling
New York (JTA) — The U.S.
Supreme Court this week
temporarily blocked a New
York state court ruling that
would deny handicapped
Chasidic children in a spe-
cial school district the use of
public school buildings.
The Supreme Court said
the New York ruling would
be stayed until it decides
whether it will hear an ap-
peal. The court's fall term
begins Oct. 4.
Earlier this month, the
state's Court of Appeals nil-
ed that the Kiryas Joel
School District violated the
constitutional separation of
church and state.
"We think the New York
Court of Appeals read the
First Amendment clause far
too broadly," said Nathan
Lev;rin, the attorney for the
school district. "We hope the
Supreme Court will use this
opportunity to finally over-
rule the decision."
The district was set up by
the New York State
Legislature. ❑
