Mr. Nathan visited Libya on the understanding that he would be granted an interview by Mr. Qadhafi, but left Tripoli with only verbal replies to his written questions, passed on to him by Mr. Qadhafi's aide. In telephone interviews from Libya, Mr. Nathan said he had no reason to doubt the explanation that Mr. Qadhafi could not see him because of a sore throat which prevented him from talking. Mr. Nathan left Libya for , Tunisia after a short visit to the island of Djerba, where there was once a large Jew- ish population. He said Mr. Qadhafi had assured him, in his replies, that he had no objections to a peace settlement in the Mid- dle East and would support any agreement reached bet- ween Israel and the Palesti- nians. "Gadhafi replied to all the questions I passed on to him," Mr. Nathan said, ad- ding that he would give more details on his questions and Mr. Qadhafi's replies after his return home to Israel. Mr. Nathan said he had been in Tripoli for four days and had been asked by Mr. Qadhafi's aides to stay in or close to his hotel at all times, on the chance that the Li- byan ruler would be possible to receive him at short notice. "That's the sort of thing that has happened to me on previous visits to Arab capi- tals to meet with Arab leaders. I'm used to it by now," Mr. Nathan said. "I told Gadhafi's aides who came to tell me that the meeting could not take place because of Moammar's sore throat, that the non-meeting was his loss, more than mine," Mr. Nathan said. Under an Israeli law, now rescinded, that prohibited contact with terrorists, Mr. Nathan served two prison terms for his meetings with Arab leaders, chiefly Yassir Arafat, in the name of peace. ❑ Trees and plants and flowers have language, feeling and prayer of their own. —Baal Shem Tov
