Group Discusses
Restitution

Budapest (JTA) — A delega-
tion of Jewish leaders met
this week with the
Hungarian finance minister
to begin formal talks about
restitution to the Jewish
community for property
seized by the Nazis or the
Communists.
The three-member delega-
tion, led by Israel Singer,
chairman of the World Jew-
ish Restitution Organiza-
tion, held its first formal
talks here with Foreign Min-
ister Istvan Szabo.
The minister assured the
delegation that the
Hungarian government is
willing to satisfy the claims
of the restitution organiza-
tion, which also represents
Jews living outside Hungary
as well as those who perish-
ed in the Holocaust and left
no heirs.
Israel will receive compen-
sation if there are no living
heirs to the property.
Included in the delegation
representing the restitution
organization were two
Israelis, Ambassador
Naphtali Lavie and Elijahu
Spanic.
In a month, Hungarian
and Jewish officials will set
up a committee to make an
inventory of all Jewish prop-
erties confiscated by the
Nazis or Communists.
The Hungarian govern-
ment has said it is willing to
compensate the Jews for
communal properties. When
Hungary signed the 1947
Paris Peace Treaty, it prom-
ised to compensate the Jews.
But the Communists did
not want to grant compensa-
tion for properties taken by
the fascists.
The delegation also will
visit other countries in Cen-
tral and Eastern Europe. ❑
