Hula Lake Re-Creates"
To Provide Farmland

Jerusalem (JTA) — Forty
years after the Jewish Na-
tional Fund drained the
swamps of the Galilee's
Hula Valley to create more
farrriland, the agency has
started work on a somewhat
opposite project — to re-
create the Hula Lake.
The inauguration
ceremony of the New Hula
Project took place last week,
as 50 heavy tractors began
work.
By November, promised
Moshe Rivlin, chairman of
the JNF, more than a mill-
ion cubic yards of earth will
be removed to form new ca-
nals in the area.
The new project does not
involve reflooding the
valley, which was drained in
the 1950s. Its purpose is
rather to raise the water
table over an area of more
than 250 acres of non-arable
peat soil.
The project aims at
rehabilitating ag,riculolial
land, enabling b- •ol
over the qual—y ol water
flowing into the Kinneret
and creating new recrea-
tional areas.
"This extensive Hula de-
velopment project carried
out by the JNF will restore
the flow of the Jordan River
to this area and crate condi-
tions which will enable peo-
ple to enjoy the advantages
of nature and surroun-
dings," said Ya'acov Tsur,
minister of agriculture.
Once the first stage of the
project is completed, an
everglade landscape will be
created as part of a major
tourism project complete
with an animal and bird
park.
