Feminist Sees
Equality Myth

Jerusalem (JTA) — The ac-
tual status of women in
Israel is far different from
that suggested by the
idealized images propagated
in the state's early years, ac-
cording to Alice Shalvi, lit-
erature professor and chair-
woman of the Israel Wo-
men's Network.
Ms. Shalvi made her ob-
servation this week before
the Women's Professional
Network, a group of English- ry
speaking women living in `i
Israel.
In a conscious effort to
fashion a new Jewish
population distinct from that
in Europe, and Eastern
Europe in particular,
Israel's founders created
egalitarian images of women
that were idealized and rep-
resented activities not tradi-
tionally Jewish, said Ms.
Shalvi.
The images included wo-
men tilling the fields of the
kibbutz, toting rifles in the
military and imitating Gold
Meir in politics, Ms. Shalvi
said.
But "the myth of equality
is exploded when you look at
the facts and figures," said:
Ms. Shalvi.
In fact, women have never
achieved equality in any of
these arenas, and largely
remain segregated in tradi-
tional "female" occupations
throughout the country.
While women have made
some inroads in the field of
Israeli law, they generally
do not hold high positions in
medicine, and are found only
in the smallest numbers at
the top of business and in-
dustry.
The impact of Israel's
military service should not

be underestimated, Ms.
Shalvi argued. While it is
theoretically compulsory for
men and women, exemptions
