Isidor Paiewonsky; and
Memoirs of a Governor by
Ralph Paiewonsky, who was
former governor of St.
Thomas.
Paiewonsky is the name of
a prominent Jewish family in
St. Thomas — and the owner
of Maps de Monde is Michael
Paiewonsky. His uncle, Ralph,
was the former governor of St.
Thomas; and his father,
Isidor, is the founder of Riise,
one of the largest businesses
in St. Thomas, and also a
well-known civic leader and
historian.
Michael Paiewonsky is car-
rying on the family tradition
of active involvement in the
U.S. Virgin Islands. His own
book, Conquest of Eden —
1493 to 1515, is a history of St.
Thomas and it's displayed
along with his father's and
uncle's books.
Visitors to the store can
quietly look over these books
and others as classical music
plays; or they can view the
unusual maps and prints on
display.
Before they leave, many of
them sign the guest book. Re-
cent visitors signing in have
come from far-flung places,
including Estonia, Buenos
Aires, Basel, Calgary and the
Philippines.
When they sign, their com-
ments are full of enthusiasm
both for the shop and the
island. "A beautiful shop and
a great honeymoon memory,"
wrote one visitor.
Wrote another, summing up
a frequent response to this
idyllic Caribbean island," St.
John is truly paradise!" ❑
