CROWN PRINCESS etr.steAtp SPECIAL This complex is a visual delight — a woodsy area of lush trees and foliage, serene and multi-leveled, where win- ding walkways and open courtyards lead to shops and boutiques housed in struc- tures made of local stone and coral. It was designed and built by architect Glen Speer, who has lived on St. John since 1969 and was inspired by the Euro- pean plantations built on St. John in the 1700s. All the buildings of Mongoose Junc- tion are made of stone quar- ried on the site, and the doors and windows are mahogany. The shops here are varied and low-key. Unlike the much more bustling shopping area in St. Thomas, this one is quietly serene. Visitors can browse at leisure for hours, without any pressure to buy. The shops include the Donald Schnell Studio, featuring handmade pottery, sculpture and blown glass; R and I Patton Goldsmithing, wiht a large selection of island-designed jewelry; and Caravan Gallery, which features ethnic jewelry and crafts from around the world. These include African and Indonesian masks, ornamen- tal boxes from India — and also delicate glass bottles from Israel. "Two Israelis walked in one day and asked, 'Are you in- terested in hand-blown glass Winding walkways and courtyards lead to shops and boutiques. from Israel?' " relates Rhada Speer, who owns Caravan Gallery together with her husband, Glen Speer, the ar- chitect who also designed Mongoose Junction. Rhada Speer, always in- terested in new crafts, im- mediately said she'd like to see the bottles. It turned out the two visitors had the glass in the hold of their sailboat. "The next day, they came back with a huge bag, which was bubble-wrapped. They'd sailed all the way from Israel with 200 glass bottles!" relates Rhada Speer. After she saw them, she ended up buying three quarters of their collection. "We bought them right then and there," she says. "We had a great time getting to know the Israelis and choosing the bottles," says Rhada, who is originally from the Napa ST. JOHN page 60 HOLIDAY CRUISE NOV. 27,1993 7 DAYS $ 798 P.P.
