Eilat Residents
Protest Blockade

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Residents
of Eilat have staged a pro-
test against a recently
stepped-up blockade of their
port by the Persian Gulf War
allies that has crippled the
Israeli harbor.
Virtually no vessels have
been able to bring their
cargoes to Eilat for more
than a month, completely
idling the port and causing
the layoff of dockworkers.
The protesters massed at
the Taba crossing point into
Egypt, blocking passage
between the two countries.
Specifically, they were derri-
onstrating against
that allied inspectors have
been turning away ships
bound for Israel while per-
mitting passage of vessels
sailing to Jordan, which was
Iraq's Gulf War ally.
The blockade, under the
auspices of the U.N. Security
Council, was put into effect
to prevent the supply of war
materiel to Iraq via the Jor-
danian port of Aqaba,
located a dozen miles from
Eilat.
But despite this original
intent, ships sailing to
Aqaba are halted, if at all,
only for cursory inspection.
The demonstrators pointed
out that it is illogical to
presume that Israel, a
longtime foe of Iraqi Presi-
dent Saddam Hussein and a
recipient of Iraqi Scud mis-
siles during the Gulf War,
would be shipping military
equipment to Baghdad.
Aqaba is known to have
been handling illegal
cargoes bound for Iraq for
years, the demonstrators
said.
Last month, an Israeli con-
tainer ship bound for Eilat
was prevented from entering
the gulf by American and
French helicopters and ships
taking part in the blockade.
The protest was sparked
by the latest action against
an Israeli vessel bound for
Eilat, which took place this
past weekend.
The Zim Haifa container
vessel was halted by French
blockade officers at the en-
trance to the Gulf of Eilat for
over 15 hours.
The inspectors informed
the ship's master they could
not guarantee that they had
not overlooked any contra-
band goods bound for Iraq,
as the containers were
stacked more than three
tiers high on its decks.
The vessel was instructed
to alter its course and sail for
an Israeli Mediterranean
port via the Suez Canal.
