hen three teens,

two of them Jew-
ish, admitted to
drawing swasti-
kas and other graffiti on a
park bench in West
Bloomfield, they called it a
prank.
Leaders of the Jewish
community called it dis-
turbing.
The weekend of June
26-27, swastikas and song
lyrics by the heavy metal
band Metallica and punk
band Danzig were drawn
on a bench in a West
Bloomfield nature pre-
serve at Arrowhead Road
and South Pontiac Trail.
Because of the young
ages of the vandals, names
were not released.
However, one youth, a
15-year-old Jewish boy
from West Bloomfield,
said to police, "None of it
was anti-Semitic. It was
something stupid to do
because we had nothing
else to do."
The 15-year-old was
joined by a 14-year-old
from White Lake. A 14-
year-old from West
Bloomfield, also Jewish,
watched but did not par-
ticipate.
Prior clean records kept
the youths from arrest and
charges in the juvenile
court system. They will
reimburse $600 to the
township parks and recre-

ation department.
"I figure an adult should
know better, but maybe I
can give a 14-year-old kid
a break. Unfortunately,
kids do some stupid
things," said West Bloom-
field Police Lt. Carl Fuhs.
"With juveniles, we're
more interested in correct-
ing the problem than pun-
ishing the individuals. It's
a morbid-type crime, but
we're giving them a
chance to correct it on
their own."
Jewish leaders were not
so ready to accept the
youths' excuses.
"This is not a prank pos-
sibility," said Richard
Lobenthal, executive
director of the local Anti-
Defamation League. "You
are talking about a kid
who needs psychiatric
help."
Mr. Lobenthal said
Nazism and militarism
have a fascination to many
teens, but questioned
what type of upbringing
the Jewish youths had
that would direct them
toward such an act.
"What's behind the
`prank' — an identifica-
tion. One identifies with
symbolism. The Jewish
kid does it and knows it's
a prank with a horren-
dously psychological over-
tone to it," he said. ❑
