GRATEFUL DEAD page 47
lowing of a family tradi-
tion.
In 1988, Debby attended
her first rock concert.
Afraid of crowds and
spending her days as a
stockbroker, Mrs.
Burnstein had no idea
what she might experi-
ence.
"I loved it. We stayed up
all night listening to Dead
tapes. And I went to all
the shows I could that
summer," Mrs. Burnstein
said. "I realized there was
another way to live. I was
unhappy in my work. So I
quit. I met Michael that
night and we've been
together ever since."
They married March 12,
1989.
Mr. Burnstein was a
longtime fan of the band.
As a youth, he literally
wore • out the album
"Workingman's Dead." He
saw his first show at
Alpine Valley, Wis., in
1984.
"I thought, what a
happy band of gypsies.
What a wonderful crowd,"
Mr. Burnstein said. "On
"In general,
they're a bunch of
environmentally
minded pacifists."
the way out I was handed
a garbage bag by another
concertgoer to help clean
up. I was hooked."
Before Danny's birth,
the Burnsteins traveled as
extensively as possible to
see their favorite tour
band. Now they limit their
journeys, in general, to the
Midwest. Mrs. Burnstein's
father has joined them at
local shows.
"The general public has
the wrong idea about the
Grateful Dead and its
fans," Mr. Burnstein said.
"In general, they're a
bunch of environmentally
minded pacifists."
Mrs. Burnstein added,
"All anyone wants to do is
give you a hug, hand you a
flower or a sticker or a
smile."
"If you don't want to
help save the environ-
ment, the world, and pro-
tect each other while lis-
tening to really great
music, I guess you might
not like it." ❑
