5onior Adult Pe ron Fund ment or human relationships. The vast majority of us are concerned for the survival of the Jewish people. We preserve loyalties expressed by some participation in Jewish life, even though many of us fall short of the maximum. A message of en- couragement comes from the Talmud: "He who begins in the performance of a good deed, we tell him to continue!' He will learn how to advance, but the beginning is of crucial importance. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Herschel once said, "The level of Jewish living must never be stationary . . . There is no standstill in the life of the spirit . . . We either ascend or go down." The question is not whether we fulfill every responsibility, every mitzvah which the tradition contains. But rather, are we moving however slowly, to greater reverence and understanding, to greater participation in the world of faith? Are we prepared at least to listen, to be receptive to the words and insights of a hallowed tradi- tion? As the sages say, it is not incumbent upon us to complete the work, but we are obliged to advance it. The Senior Adult population is one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit currently offers 93 different activities which focus on the varied interests and needs of the 1500 older Jewish adults who participate weekly at the Maple/Drake and Jimmy Prentis Morris buildings. The programs help to contribute an enhanced quality of life for the seniors and thus increasing their self-esteem and prolonging independence, Through the generosity of contributors, the Senior Adult Patron Fund offsets the cost of providing memberships and enrichment activities for this vital population. The Finance Ministry has responded by offering three annual 3 percent increases. The government obtained court orders against 15 per- cent of the strikers, ordering /- them to return to work im- mediately to ensure a con- tinuation of minimum ser- vices by essential workers.
