REELING page 1

Top on the list of prospec-
tive members are the
Orthodox and new Russian
Americans.
This month, those commu-
nity members who together
hosted 20 parlor meetings to
raise money for the $4 million
project will be contacted to
help boost membership in the
first few months.
They will make phone calls
and meet one-on-one with
prospective members. Cost
will be $475 for a general fam-
ily membership, which is re-
ciprocal at the Maple-Drake
facility. Health-club members
can use either facility, but
members can only have one
locker.
JCC officials said it is a
misconception that residents
of the southeast corner of the
community have less money
than those using the Maple-
Drake facility. In fact, they
say, 50 percent of the current
11,000 members get scholar-
ships to the JCC.
Though the cost will be the
same, members to the JPM
center also can obtain schol-
arships.
Officials and lay leaders
are working hard to attract
the neighboring Orthodox
community. On the roster is
designing a schedule that ac-
commodates the Orthodox
community centered at the 10
Mile and Greenfield area of
Southfield and Oak Park.
The physical education de-
partment is scheduling sep-
arate hours for men and
women to use the health-club
and pool facilities. In addition,
crews are constructing di-
viders in the health club area
so women and men can exer-
cise in separate areas during
the allotted times. Pool view-
ing areas will be covered dur-
ing these hours.
Within the next month,
physical education depart-
ment organizers plan to meet
with the community to discuss
further needs.
"We will make everything
accommodating so the
Orthodox community feels
comfortable here," said JPM
Director Leslie Bash. "This is
not a risk; it is an obligation.
We can't be successful with-
out serving that segment of
the community."
Ruth Goldberg, wife of
Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg of
Young Israel of Southfield, is
designing the first structured
swim program for the stu-
dents at Bais Yaakov.

"This is what's been miss-
ing," said Robert Aronson, ex-
ecutive vice president for the
Jewish Federation, who has r_<
been lobbying for an expand-
ed JPM in Oak Park since his
arrival in 1989.
Mr. Aronson noted the lo-
cation of the JPM building,
which is walking distance to
Northgate Apartments where
many Russians first reside
when they arrive in the city.
"This will put a full-service
center in the heart of a vibrant
Jewish community that will
make it exciting to live there,"
Mr. Aronson said. "It will help
integrate new American fam-
ilies into the community, and
in a sense, it will be like the
old-time settlement house
where people first came to-
gether. It is the feeling of a
melting pot."
With the help of Southfield
advertising giant WB Doer,
JPM has put together sever-
al advertisements, one which
offers the first 350 new mem-
bers who sign up at JPM sig-
nificantly reduced rates.
These rates could save up
to $75 a year off a general
family membership and up to
$200 a year off an adult health
club membership. To date,
about 50 have taken advan-
tage of the offer which began
last month.
The figures are not dis-
couraging to Dr. Plotnick.
Historically, people do not
buy health-club memberships
during the summer. And peo-
ple do not pay for member-
ships before they can use _<
something, Dr. Plotnick sug-
gested.
"By the first of September, 1
we will have met our targets,"
Dr. Plotnick said. "We expect c_<
200 to 225 health club units
and 100 family units by
December."
The figure translates to
nearly 1,000 new members for
the metropolitan Detroit
Jewish Community Centers. <
There will be a 25-yard
state-of-the-art swimming )
pool, complete with access
ramps for handicappers and
senior adults and a specially
designed area for swimming
lessons and exercise classes.
There also will be a coin- -
plete health club, and a ren-
ovated gym.
"People will be motivated,"
said Cheryl Guyer of
Huntington Woods, who co- -;
chairs the JPM committee.
"I will be happy to tear up
Y CA card," Ms. Guyer
myM
said.
