Slide Lecture
On Ink Painting

Michael Farrell, art historian
from University of Windsor
will present a lecture and
demonstration on "The
Mystery of Chinese and
Japanese Black Ink Pain-
ting" 7 p.m. July 23 at the
Print Gallery, 29203 Nor-
thwestern, Southfield.
This slide-illustrated lec-
ture will trace the develop-
ment of this form of painting
in China, where it left the
monasteries to become an
academic style used in such
traditional subjects as land-
scape and still-life painting.
The Japanese embraced the
technique, nationalized it and
produced Japan's first artists
of international repute, like
Sesshu.
