Helping Women to Meet
the Healthcare Challenge

oday's women lead full lives with incredibly active
schedules. Whether pursuing careers, raising families
— or both — women are taking on more challenges
than ever before. And one of these challenges is finding
quality healthcare for themselves and their families.
For years Sinai Hospital has recognized that women
need more than a good obstetrician or gynecologist.
That's why Sinai offers women a wide range of services
that includes multiple specialties to meet the needs of
women throughout the important times of their lives.

40 YEARS OF

Caring

In 1953 Sinai Hospital made a commitment
to the community it served. With a promise
to provide health care for people of all races,
creeds and colors, Sinai embarked on a jour-
ney of medical excellence that has served the
community well for the last 40 years.
"As a community and teaching hospital,
Sinai is committed to service as well as edu-
cation and research — much of which benefits

the women of southeastern Michigan," says
Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology David
B. Schwartz, M.D. Whether pioneering laser
procedures which offer alternatives to hys-
terectomy, relief from incapacitating menstrual
pain, or researching the effects of different
medications on lowering cholesterol in women,
Sinai recognizes the unique health needs of
women.

One Health System — Many Specialties

T

he Sinai Health
System is com-
mitted to provid-
ing a healthy
lifestyle for women of all
ages. That's why Sinai
has worked for 40 years to
develop programs and ser-
vices within medical spe-
cialties that particularly
address women's health is-
sues. Here are just a few:
Mammography–A new-
ly renovated mammogra-
phy suite has been
designed for the comfort
and privacy of its patients.
The suites are fully ac-
credited by both the Amer-
ican College of Radiology
and the state of Michigan.
Not only does Sinai's radi-
ology equipment meet ex-
acting standards, but so do
the technicians and radi-
ologists who operate that
equipment.
Cardiology – There's a
common misconception
that heart attacks and
heart disease affect only
men. Yet each year
250,000 women in the
United States will die from
heart attacks and anoth-

er 250,000 will succumb to
other cardiovascular dis-
eases. With one of the
most comprehensive car-
diac programs available in
the Midwest, Sinai helps
women to become heart
healthy through educa-
tion, treatment and sup-
port.
Psychiatry – For years
women were told that pre-
menstrual syndrome
(PMS) and post-partum
depression ("baby blues")
were nothing to be too con-
cerned about. If depres-
sion starts to interfere
with a woman's every day
life, however, there is
something that can be
done. Women who select
the Sinai Health System
have access to a wide
range of psychiatric ser-
vices. Services include
personal counseling, a Day
Hospital to help patients
reach their full potential
for community living, out-
patient service, short-term
inpatient treatment and a
24- hour crisis interven-
tion program.
Oncology – There are

Sinai Women's Center Offers
Specialty Services in the Suburbs

Sinai Hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecolo-
gy has long been renowned for exceptional clinical services —
high-risk pregnancy care, amniocentesis, high-resolution ul-
trasound, gynecologic oncology. With the opening of the Sinai
Women's Center last September, these same services are now
available in the suburbs as well.
Located in the Berry Health Center on Orchard Lake Road
in Farmington Hills, the
Sinai Women's Center of-
fers special gynecologic and
high-risk obstetric care.
Coupled with its comfort-
able, pleasant decor and its
proximity to Sinai's Berry
Surgery Center, which is
right downstairs, the
Women's Center offers an
ideal setting for women's
health services. In addi-

Physicians working at the Women's Center are two gyne-
cologic experts — Alfred I. Sherman, M.D., the first board cer-
tified gynecologic oncologist in Michigan, and Sinai's Section
Chief of Gynecology Milton Goldrath, M.D., who performs the
hysterectomy alternative laser ablation of the endometrium
on site.
For high-risk obstetric care, Sinai's maternal-fetal medicine
specialists Richard Bronsteen, M.D., Gregory Goyert, M.D.,
Debra Wright, M.D., and Dr. Schwartz provide consultations
and comprehensive care and perform the same highly tech-
nical procedures that are performed at the hospital.
Like the main hospital, the Sinai Women's Center offers the
"most up-to-date ultrasound equipment," says Dr. Schwartz.

tion to expert medical care,
Sinai's oncology staff
maintains an environment
in which the needs and
concerns of women are
handled with compassion
and kindness. Through
education, support and
open communication,
Sinai helps women to ad-
dress their fears and locate
community resources that
offer support to cancer pa-
tients.

locations in Detroit and

practice physicians pro-
vide quality medical care
in the fields of obstetrics,
gynecology, family plan-
ning, pediatrics and pre-
ventative medicine.
Gerontology – As the
population continues to

sessment. and Clinic
(SSAC) offers comprehen-
sive care for elderly pa-
tients and their families.
For women who find
themselves caring for an
elderly parent, the SSAC's
gerontology consultation
team can help women to
cope with the physical,
mental and social prob-
lems that are often associ-
ated with caring for an
aged parent.
Each of these Sinai spe-
cialties is committed to
working together to pro-
vide women with the qual-
ity of care that has become
synonymous with the
name "Sinai."
