• House-hunt high-roller style.
Just because you can barely af-
ford a condo doesn't mean that
you won't be able to move into Mil-
- lionaire Row some day. It's free
and fun to drop by ritzy, glitzy
"open houses," where you may
pick up plenty of great ideas for
your future estate.
• Pedal away your stress on a
bike ride. Just ended another
crazy week at the office? Rather
than bend your boy- or girlfriend's
ear, get your bike in gear and take
off around the neighborhood or, if
doable, down to a local park. It's
a low-stress way to exercise, ex-
plore new scenery and get away.
If you or your date don't have
bikes, try borrowing them from a
neighbor.
• Work out together. Most gyms
will let you bring a friend in at lit-
tle or no cost. Drag him to your
aerobics class...show her how to
use free weights...then relax in the
7-pool if there's one available. A
great habit to get into, with or
without a date.
• Heat up some home-cooked ro-
mance. Dig up that exotic recipe
you've wanted to try, then whip it
up with a date. Make it an event
1 ' by dining in style, with new can-
' dies, fresh flowers and soft music.

• Volunteer to do a good deed
for each other. Is he sick of the
, clutter overtaking his apartment?
Offer to help him go through his
bookshelves, cabinets and closets
— and help him get his giveaways
' to Goodwill or any other appro-
priate source. Does she want to
brighten up her living room? Of-
/-• , fer to help with the painting.
In any case, remember to bring
some refreshments for break-time.
Warning: When engaged in such
projects, you might learn more
than you expected about your
friend or date.
You can have just as much fun
on shoestring dates as on night-
after-night of bank-breaking dat-
ing rituals such as gourmet
dinners out and first-run movies.
Sometimes even more fun. And
you'll have some money socked
away, to boot. ❑
