Shabbaton chaperones.
When she called back,
she told me that they said
that I was irresponsible
and that they would not
pick me up from
Sportsworld.

me up. The ride cost $25
up front.
When I returned to my
host family's house and
opened the door, I was
met with warm cheers
from my friends. The
organizers of the
Shabbaton realized I was
missing from the bus, but
they figured that "anyone
with half a brain could get
back to the house."
Overall, I had a great
time at the Model United
Nations event.
But my mother was hor-
rified when I described
the Sportsworld escapade.
Now, whenever I attend a
Shabbaton, my mother
fills out a clause on the
bottom of the application
that says organizers can-
not leave me at an event
and must set up a buddy
system.
Strange. We never
thought that was neces-
sary before. ❑

JWV Awards
Scholarships
The Department of Michigan
of the Jewish War Veterans
and the Jewish War Veterans
Auxiliaries presented 24
young people scholarships of
$500 each at their recent con-
vention. The scholarships are
given in honor of or in
memory of a member of the
JWV Post or Auxiliary.
Those on the JWV scholar-
ship committee are Eleanore
Silk, Evelyn Skupsky, Irving
Marshall and Saul Glosser.
The monies raised are from
the sale of poppies in May.
Among the scholarship win-
ners are: Stacey Aronoff, Jill
Dorsey, Brant Friedenberg,
Steven Gamburd, Lisa Harty
and Melissa Lenzer.
