too, may seem to contra-
dict Torah — but I believe
they do not.
However, in his best-
selling book, A Brief
History of Time, and in a
documentary film by the
same name, Professor
Stephen Hawking of
Cambridge University
argues that science sup-
ports atheism.
Professor
Hawking
points out that the Big
Bang, a theory which
describes the birth of the
universe, originated from
a situation much like that
found in black holes, "vac-
uums" in space that suck
matter and light into
them with powerful gravi-
tational pull.
Black holes compress
stars to the point at which
the star's volume equals
zero. At this point, the
star has infinite density.
Based on this concept,
Professor Hawking postu-
lated 20 years ago that
the universe would have
been created in the
reverse order — that is, it
would have begun with
this point of infinite den-
sity and expanded out-
ward, causing the Big
Bang.
I am not attempting to
disagree with this well-
established
theory.
Rather,
Professor
Hawking goes on to argue
that because all mathe-
matic principles break
down at this point of infi-
nite density (the first
moment of the Big Bang),
this supports the idea that
there was no order.
He goes on to say that
because there was no
order at the moment of
the Big Bang, this sup-
ports an atheistic theory:
If the universe was creat-
ed by God, then there
should have been order
even during the first
moment of the Big Bang.
This is our point of con-
tention.
I believe that rather
than refuting the idea of
God, the fact that mathe-
matics, or order, did not
apply at the moment of
the Big Bang indicates
that the Big Bang was
caused by God.
If we say that God cre-
ated the universe, doesn't
it follow that God created
the laws of mathematics?
And wouldn't the laws of
mathematics have been
created with the creation
of the universe during the
first moments of the Big
