Benefits The Haven

T

he Second Ladies
Power Luncheon was
held at the home of
Sylvia Sullivan to
benefit the Haven, Oakland
County's program for vic-
tims of domestic and sexual
abuse. More than 50 patrons
attended the event to hear
guest speakers Sugar
Rautbord and Ronna
Romeny.
Ms. Rautbord is a Chicago
socialite and author. She is
an expert fund-raiser and
author of the novels Girls in
High Places and Sweet
Revenge. She is working on a
new novel, The Gift of the
Chameleon.
Both speakers emphasized
how much power women
have and how women can
make a difference. They
praised the patrons who are
hard working volunteers
and fund raising for immpor-
tant causes.
Betty Jean Rivkin is in
charge of fund raising for
Haven. Some of the com-
mittee members for this
Haven benefit included:
Lois Shavesky, Carol
Wendel and Sandy
Mueller. Some of the
patrons included: Barbara
Cohn, Linda Sircus, Glo-
ria Gilbert, Meryl
Podolsky, Linda Taub-
man, Laura Munder and
Linda Hayman
Many retailers donated to
the event including Jules
Schubot Jewellers, which
gave the hostess a Lalique
woman. Thrifty Flowers and
florist Don Jensen made the
beautiful arrangements

while Saks Fifth Avenue
provided favors.

CHOREOGRAPHER DEBUT

Wendy Shapero of West
Bloomfield is the choreogra-
pher of Godspell, appearing
now through Aug. 1 at the
Birmingham Theatre. Ms.
Shapero says the hardest
facet of choreographing this
show was designing the
dances for all 10 cast mem-
bers, with only herself to
work out all the movements.
"It was tough standing in for
10 bodies. I formed a bit of
an identity crisis, but I'm
back now," says Ms.
Shapero. She dances in
Godspell as well and solos in
the song "Day by Day."
Stage Door Productions will
produce the musical under
the direction of Paul
Hopper, with Dan Roth
as musical director.

JAllFEST

To celebrate the 70th an-
niversary of the Birm-
ingham Community. House,
"Jazzfest '93" will be held
July 29-31. During these
days jazz musicians will be
performing downtown. The
Birmingham Restaurant
Collection, 15 local restau-
rants, is also sponsoring the
event. Some of the com-
mittee members include:
Lois Shaevsky, Susie
Bluestein, Lori Simon and
Fannie Grennebaum. Call
