Ms. Bender is not a Cuban
Jew; she was born and grew
up in Metuchen, N.J., where
her father, Mordecai Golds-
tein, is cantor of Temple Neve
Shalom.
She moved of Puerto Rico
five years ago after she mar-
ried Joel Bender, a Puerto
Rican Jew of Cuban descent,
and by now she feels very
much a part of the Spanish
Jewish community here.
It's very family-oriented,
much more so than the
States," says Ms. Bender, who
met her husband at a Young
Judea camp. "And it's like a
shtetl; everybody sticks
together. When you marry a
Puerto Rican Jew, you marry
the whole community and the
culture."
It's a culture with a strong
Latin influence. The
Argentinian-born rabbi, Alex-
ander Felch, often gives his
sermons in Spanish. The Mor-
ris Rothenberg Memorial
Library at the JCC — largest
Jewish library in the Carib-
bean — has books in English,
Hebrew and Spanish. When
there are weddings or bar or
bat mitzvah receptions, "the
music is always Latin," says
Ms. Bender.
"It's nice to go to the beach
every week, and our kids can
play together and meet other
Jewish kids," says Ms.
Bender. It's nice for Jewish
travelers, too. Because so
many Puerto Rican. Jews
socialize together in one
place, it's an opportunity for
travelers to meet the local
Jews in a place other than the
synagogue.
"This is a second home to a
lot of Cuban Jews," says Ann
Mukamal, relaxing on a chair
just outside of the fitness
center of the Caribe Hilton.
She's a member of the Hilton
Swim and Tennis Club and
also an aerobics instructor.
"It's social outlet, a place to
relax, and very family-
oriented. People bring all
their kids and their gran-
dkids. They have birthday
parties here on the beach and
other parties, too. The Cuban
Jews work very hard, but they
also know how to have a good
time."
Like Devra Bender, Ms.
Makamal emphasizes that
members of this community
are all active.
Being part of an active,
Spanish-speaking Jewish
community like this has been
a real benefit to her son and
daughter, she says. "We were
members of a big congrega-
tion in New Jersey, but people
weren't nearly as active as
they are here," she says. "My
kids get more Jewishness
here than they ever did in the
States." ❑
