In the past two years, there
has been little conflict between
Jewish groups and INS, part-
ly because the urgency of re-
moving Jews from the former
USSR has lessened. But previ-
ously, INS frequently seemed
to erect new obstacles to Jew-
ish refugees. Jewish activists
here believe INS could assume
greater importance to the Jew-
ish community if recent im-
provements for Jews in that
part of the world are reversed.
Lubavitch
Reaches Out
Lubavitch Chasidim, who have
never been shy about outreach,
are now reaching out on Capi-
tol Hill. The group is expand-
ing its American Friends of
Lubavitch office here, and
starting several programs
aimed at House and Senate
staffers and Jewish legislators.
"We expect to conduct Jew-
ish study programs, breakfast
and lunches for Jewish staffers
and, hopefully, Shabbat din-
ners, too," said Rabbi Levi
Shemtov, who will coordinate
the effort. "We'll coordinate li-
aison between the more than
400 local Chabad centers
around the country and mem-
bers of Congress."
Of his initial forays to the
Hill, the rabbi said, "People are
welcoming it. I think this will
fill a void that's been there for
years."
He insisted that the out-
reach effort is "not a prosely-
tizing effort, by any means. We
are simply serving Jewish staff
and Jewish members with a
chance to enhance their own
Judaism according to the level
they feel comfortable with." ❑
