tinued because of budget
limitations.
The Jewish Occupational
Internship Program
(JOIN), which provides col-
lege students with summer
experiences in Jewish
agencies, was started in
1974 and discontinued in
1980. After being reinstat-
ed at a reduced level in
1987, JOIN qualified for
Van Dusen support.
The Van Dusen Endow-
ment Challenge provides
matching gifts to complete
endowment campaigns. It
is the result of a partner-
ship of the Kresge
Foundation and the
Community Foundation for
Southeastern Michigan to
enhance endowment giving
in the state.
Using a recently-devel-
oped slide presentation,
Federated Endowment
Fund volunteers and staff
visit businesspeople whose
clients could be prospective
donors.
In addition, periodic
seminars feature speakers
with endowment expertise.
In May, Washington attor-
ney Edward Jay Beckwith
discussed "Charitable
Giving: Big Business —
Big Benefits" before a
group of financial advisers
whose clients might be
interested in endowments.
Across the board, all
those working with endow-
ments encourage prospec-
tive donors to meet with
their personal financial
advisers — lawyers,
accountants or financial
planners — before making
any final decisions.
Robert Steingold, second
vice president at Shearson
Lehman Brothers, always
reminds his clients of the
irrevocability of an endow-
ment arrangement so they
will make sure that they
are not stretching them-
selves beyond their means.
Mr. Maddin notes that
more and more people are
becoming involved
"Participation in the
endowment process brings
the feeling of doing some-
thing good, getting some-
thing emotional and intel-
lectual and being part of
something that is growing
and important to the corn-
munity." 0
