Weight Loss Shocks Scientists
Seattle — A nutrition organization
was hopeful that a nutritionally com-
plete food tablet would eliminate
world hunger, until the study revealed
that one of the ingredients could
cause weight loss without dieting.
Scientists in Europe found that an
ingredient in the product named
Food Complex 3 actually caused peo-
ple to lose weight, even though they
weren't changing their eating patterns.
According to a study published in the
British Journal of Nutrition, scientists
had speculated that the weight loss
was due to a reduction in the intesti-
nal absorption of fat grams.
The development of Food Complex
3, a project of First Lite Intl Inc.,
could not be used to fulfill its intend-
ed goal but it has been a great suc-
cess for overweight people. A Miami
Beach, Florida, man struggling with a
weight problem for 15 years used
Food Complex 3 on the recommenda-
tion of his doctor and lost 43 lbs. He
said, "My cholesterol dropped 96
points and I lost 43 lbs. Now I have to
buy all new clothes." In another report
from Mesa, Arizona, a pharmacist lost
16 lbs. in 14 days with Food Complex
3 and never felt hungry.
Food Complex 3 is available
through physicians and pharmacists
without a prescription.
Food Complex 3 is not a drug and
only contains natural ingredients
known to be safe by the FDA. Copies

Belgian Minister
Criticizes Israel
Brussels (JTA) — A Belgian
Cabinet minister has caused
a political uproar here by
visiting Libya, in an ap-
parent violation of diplo- .
matic sanctions, and by
justifying the trip with a
negative remark about
Israel.
Robert Urbain, minister of
foreign trade and European
affairs, met with Libyan
Foreign Minister Omar
Mustafa al- Montasser dur-
ing a one-day visit to the Li-
byan capital of Tripoli.
Mr. Urbain confirmed the
meeting, but stressed it was
a private visit. Apparently,
he was acting on his own in-
itiative.
Mr. Urbain, a French-
speaking Socialist, defended
his trip, insisting it did not
violate the air embargo and
the reduction of diplomatic
relations with Libya ordered
by the United Nations.
The sanctions were impos-
ed after Libya's refusal to
extradite two of its citizens
accused of involvement in
the 1988 bombing of a Pan
American jet.
"But if I should not go to
countries which do not
respect United Nations
resolutions, I would not have
been to Israel for a long
time," Mr. Urbain said in an
interview with Belgian
radio.
That statement triggered a
swift reaction from the
Israeli Embassy here.
"Israel's Embassy ex-
presses its astonishment
over the fact that Minister
Urbain had thought it
necessary to invoke the
State of Israel in order to
justify his visit to Libya,"
the embassy said in a com-
munique issued last week.
Mr. Urbain visited Israel
earlier this year at the head
of a business and trade dele-
gation.
Mr. Urbain made his trip
to Libya after being on vaca-
tion at the Tunisian island of
Djerba, from which he trav-
eled to Tripoli by road.
"This sort of visit is com-
mon between two countries
where official contacts are
inopportune," he added.
Mr. Urbain is known to
cultivate many Arab, and in
particular Libyan, friend-
ships.
An embarrassed Belgian
Foreign Ministry spokesman
emphasized that Mr. Urbain
had no authority to do
anything in Libya on behalf
of the Belgian government.
The spokesman stressed
that Mr. Urbain's visit was
not a Belgian diplomatic in-
itiative. Observers noted
that Belgium also represents
the United States' interests
in Tripoli.
This trip presumably was
to be kept secret by the two
sides, but the Libyan news
agency JANA announced in
a short dispatch that Mr.
Urbain had left Tripoli after
a 24-hour visit during which
he spoke of cooperation bet-
ween the two countries.
Belgium Prime Minister
Jean-Luc Dehaene said he
was not aware of Mr. Ur-
bain's trip to Libya.
"The Belgian position.
toward Libya has not chang-
ed," a spokesman for Mr.
Dehaene said.
The French-language daily
Le Soir said Mr. Urbain had
been "trapped like a novice"
by the Libyan news agency,
which announced the visit
when it was supposed to be
private.
The opposition Flemish
Liberals are planning to
question the Prime Minister
in Parliament over Mr. Ur-
bain's trip, and some have
called for the minister's res-
ignation.
Air China
Israel Flights
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Air China,
the national airline of the
People's Republic of China,
announced that it would be
inaugurating weekly non-
stop flights between Beijing
and Tel Aviv later this mon-
th.
This puts into effect
China's part of an agree-
ment on mutual air service
that was signed last year by
China and Israel after they
established diplomatic rela-
tions.
El Al, Israel's national
airline, has been flying to
China since last September.
By an unfortunate quirk of
international scheduling,
both El Al and Air China
will leave Israel's Ben-
Gurion airport on Thursdays
— the Chinese airline at
5:10 p.m. and El Al shortly
before midnight.
On the flights from Beij-
ing, Air China will depart on
Wednesday mornings. El Al
leaves Beijing on Saturday
nights.
