The lawn has been
carefully weeded and
cut. The set arrangement
has been designed to
block out the building
walls behind the per-
formers. And a piano has
been placed on a plat-
form so it can be moved
outside easily.
There will be no artifi-
cial lighting, but there
will be electronic help for
the sound — body mikes
for the performers,
walkie talkies to commu-
nicate cues and taped
sound effects.
"We really are concen-
trating on dynamics and
projection so that sound
won't get carried away,"
said • music director
Michelle Rott, who con-
ducts theater workshops
for children.
Ms. Rott coached the
youngsters on speaking
and breathing tech-
niques so they can con-
serve their voices while
projecting into the larger
spaces.
The script was pre-
pared by Meriwether
Publishing Ltd., a
Colorado organization
that specializes in youth
theater. The songs are
all original.
However, to accommo-
date the play in an out-
door setting and still be
able to bring it inside if
it rains, Ms. Gurwin has
done some streamlining.
Only slightly longer than
one hour, it will be pre-
sented without intermis-
sion.
Sarah Radtke, 12, who
plays Louisa Pamper-
mouse, has had experi-
ence in outdoor produc-
tions, appearing at the
Greek Theatre at
Cranbrook. She believes
a variety of stage work
can only bring more
presence and grace.
Sarah, who also has
appeared with the
Bloomfield Players and
at Greenfield Village,
introduced her mother to
community theater, and
Lynn Radtke joins her
daughter in Phantom of
the Op'ry.
"I have never made a
decision to audition,"
said Mrs. Radtke, who
portrays Mrs. Swansong.
