S.R. Weilerstein
New York (JTA) — Sadie Rose
Weilerstein, author of 15
children's books including the
well-known K'tonton series,
died of a heart attack June 23
in Rockville, Md. She was 98.
She wrote her first book,
What Danny Did, in 1928. In
1935, she published The
Adventures of K'tonton, the
Jewish Tom Thumb, and
later wrote three more books
about K'tonton as well as a
compilation of her most pop-
ular stories, The Best of
K'tonton.
Ms. Weilerstein, a native
of Rochester, N.Y., began
her career by reading stories
to her oldest son Herschel
and the neighborhood chil-
dren. She decided to make
up her own stories because of
the lack of stories about Jew-
ish life.
"I always liked to come
home and read a story to my
son that reinforced our expe-
riences together," Ms.
Weilerstein said.
"But there were no stories
then that echoed the joy of
polishing the Shabbat
candlesticks until he could
see his face in them, or
building a sukkah. So I
made up my own stories."
At her mother's urging,
Ms. Weilerstein wrote down
her stories and submitted
them for publication.
Her books, published by
Doubleday, the Jewish
Publication Society for
America and the Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism, have been trans-
lated into five languages and
have received numerous
book awards.
Meyer Guggenheim, a Swiss
immigrant to the U.S., in
1888, at the age of 60, in-
vested $25,000 in two sup-
posedly worn-out silver and
lead mines in Colorado. By
the time he died, 17 years
later, Mr. Guggenheim was
one of the wealthiest men in
America and controlled
much of the precious metals
and ores in the world.
