Audrey and Steve Lorber 557-4010 In second grade, I was afraid to make friends and they were afraid to make friends with me. I was afraid of what I didn't know, and they were afraid of what they didn't know. What intrigues you most about Judaism? I really like studying Torah. When I first came to Hillel, it was very hard. I had to have tutors, but I liked the challenge of it and I knew I had to under- stand it. What's the point of reading something if you don't understand it? With Torah, there are situations. real-life Although they might have happened thousands of years ago, they still reoc- cur. What was the biggest challenge academical- ly? Learning Hebrew. It was the most difficult to under- stand. Anyone can learn English, but not everyone can learn Torah and Hebrew. It takes patience to learn your aleph bet. Do you think there is anti-Semitism in the black community? There is anti-Semitism everywhere. It's bred into people. Parents teach their kids that way, and when they grow up, they teach their children that way, and it just goes on and on. I've experienced it. It's happened to me because people just didn't under- stand. They're ignorant, I guess, but I can't change their viewpoints. What do you think the solution is to racism and anti-Semitism? People have to want to solve the problem. They have to want to learn about people with different cultures, nationalities. Teachers could teach more about it. You never get enough of learning. But a lot of people don't want to learn. That's why you have groups like the Ku Klux Klan. If people wanted to, they could stop racism and anti-Semitism, but some don't want to. I'm just making sure that I'm one less bigot. How about prejudice between blacks and white Jews? That's dumb. Both of them should just come together. The Jews have been in the Holocaust and blacks have been slaves. You've got two minorities. If you come together, you can make a huge impact on the rest of the people. But if you sit there and you fight each other, what are you going to accom- plish? Where will you attend high school? Berkley or Akiva Hebrew Day School. It'll be tough to pick either way. Akiva has the Hebrew, but Berkley has the sports. Each school has its advan- tages and disadvantages. Most of the kids in my class are going to public schools. If I go to Berkley High, I'll continue my Hebrew through UHS classes. How about marriage? I don't have a problem with color — as long as he's Jewish. I feel that if I'm Jewish, my kids should be Jewish. They should have a Jewish father and they should be raised in a Jewish home. I hope this doesn't hap- pen, but let's say I do find a man when I grow up and I start to fall in love. If he happens to be Christian and we decide to get mar- ried, then I don't think I'd have kids. I wouldn't want them to grow up being con- fused and I wouldn't want to give them the choice to be Christian or Jewish. I don't think that's fair. The kid may feel that if he goes with his mom's religion, then maybe his dad won't love him anymore. If I marry a Jewish man, then my kids won't grow up confused. Well, not as confused. I mean, I'm con- fused about some things now, but at least religion will be one less worry for them. What is the most important part of Judaism for you? I think it would be main- taining the Sabbath — lighting the candles, going to synagogue, not going to movies on Friday night and Saturday. Not a lot of Jews can do that. It takes discipline. I think that if you can accomplish that, then I think you're ready for just about anything. CI
