and Eric Hawkins.
With the Oklahoma
Philharmonic, he extends
invitations to many types
of visiting artists. "We
have very positive experi-
ences with the soloists who
come here," he said. "I like
them to express their own
ideas. I don't think it's
right to hire a soloist and
then tell the soloist how to
play."
Mr. Levine also enjoys
exchanging ideas when he
is a guest conductor and
has instituted new
Oklahoma presentations
based on what he encoun-
ters outside the city. For
instance, after he was
asked to conduct a winter
holiday extravaganza in
Indianapolis, he started a
similar program in his own
city, featuring theater,
puppetry, choruses and
dancing.
When he is not traveling
with his music, Mr.
Levine, who is single,
learns about other places
by operating a ham radio,
calling it a radio version of
putting a note in a bottle
and seeing what comes
back.
Each time Mr. Levine
picks up his baton for an
Independence Day concert,
he remembers what hap-
pened during a July 4 pro-
gram in New Mexico,
where he got through a
catastrophe by maintain-
ing his sense of humor.
During an outdoor pro-
gram, there was a near-
gale-force wind, and only
half the orchestra could
play. The other half had to
hold down all the sheet
music.
Joel Levine will conduct
the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra 8:30 p.m. July 3
and 4, at Greenfield
Village. For information,
call the DSOH, 833-3700. ❑

Simon's 'Blues'

days through Saturdays at 8
p.m.

(2228). The Ann Arbor Civic
