ROSE GARDEN page 53
must have happened in
last night's storm, he rea-
sons.
He sets his cane down
and gently makes his way
through the garden. He
bends down to tighten all
the ties, stopping to
admire one near the mid-
dle. "Now that's a hearty
plant," he says.
Another, less-promising
shrub, also receives his
attention. "Don't worry.
The sun will bring it back,"
he says. "The sun will
bring it back."
"See this bud?" he asks,
holding a small, pointy yel-
low-orange blossom.
"Every time you see one of
these there will be a toma-
to. Even the small plants
here have buds."
Protecting the garden
are two large plastic flow-
ers — one orange, one blue
— that spin furiously in
the wind. "Those chase the
birds away," he explains.
Tomatoes may be his
forte these days, but it was
another food that kept Mr.
Rose's attention for much
of his life.
In 1927, he left Ohio and
settled in Detroit, where
he had relatives, and
found a job as a meat cut-
ter. He worked in the
meat, and later grocery,
business until his retire-
ment.
He started his first gar-
den 15 years ago.
"At my age, a lot of peo-
ple are taking a nap about
now," he says during a 9
a.m. review of his garden.
"Not me. I could stay here
all day."
When not caring for his
tomatoes, Mr. Rose likes to
feed the swans and ducks
at Quarton Lake, where
one of his children lives.
"Take a look at these,"
he says, pulling from his
wallet a collection of pho-
tos of the birds. "I give
them 100 pounds of feed
every two weeks, even in
the winter. Whenever they
see my car, they come
right up." ❑
Dinitz Is Asked
To Step Down
Jerusalem (JTA) Simcha
Dinitz, chairman of the Jew-
ish Agency and the World
Zionist Organization, has
come under renewed attack,
as the two bodies are set to
begin their annual
meetings.
According to a report on
army radio, some members
of the Labor Party want
Jewish Agency Chairman
Simcha Dinitz to resign or
step down until a police in-
quiry into his charge card
activities is complete.
Mr. Dinitz is under in-
vestigation for the alleged
misuse of a Jewish Agency
credit card.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin and other party
leaders quickly denied the
report, saying Mr. Dinitz en-
joys the party's complete
trust and support.
Mr. Rabin called on all fac-
tions within the party to stop
what he said were un-
justified attacks on Mr.
Dinitz who, he noted, was
democratically elected to
represent the party as the
head of the agency and the
World Zionist Organization.
Nonetheless, in a radio
interview following the news
report, Labor Knesset mem-
ber Haggai Merom said
some in the party believe a
successor should be readied
in the event an indictment is
brought.
He said the best candidate
for the job is Labor Knesset
member Avraham Burg, the
popular head of the
Knesset's Education Com-
mittee.
The suggestion of Mr.
Dinitz' agency demise un-
doubtedly was timed to
precede the meeting of the
Zionist General Council next
week and the Jewish Agency
Assembly the week after,
when some believe the Jew-
ish Agency Board of Gover-
nors will apply pressure on
him.
Mr. Dinitz, meanwhile,
refused comment on the
matter.
When asked if he was "con-
fident of his position going
into the assembly, he replied
he was "very confident.
"I'm concentrating on
matters of substance," he
said.
