Morton gets strapped

in.

During the last four
years Morton raced in a
few Formula 2000 events
each year, at his own
expense.
He saw his chance for
a return to full-time
racing in May, when a
Zerex Saab Series race
was added to the
Detroit Grand Prix week-
end.
The Saab races include
as many as 30 cars, all of
which are identical. Each
racer leases a car and a
crew • from the series
owner, Skip Barber
Racing, for $7,000 per
race. Racers may not
make any mechanical
changes to the car, but
may set it up to suit
their driving style by
adjusting the wings or
the tire pressure.
The cars are single-
seat, open-wheel racers
powered by a stock Saab
Turbo two-litre engine
and have a maximum
speed of about 165 miles
per hour. The races are
timed, 30-minute sprints
with no scheduled pit
stops.
Morton was backed
with $12,000, put up by
five local businesses. But
his Grand Prix weekend
began badly. Because of
mechanical problems, he
got only 10 minutes of
practice time on June 11,
the first day of the three-
day racing weekend.
During practice June
12, Morton tried to go too
fast, too soon, and
crashed into a wall. He
walked away from the
crash, suffering only
bruises and scratches,
but the left side of
the car was damaged
severely.

Emotionally, "I was
pretty shaken up about
it," Morton said. "It was
a pretty bad hit. Cement
walls don't move."
But he pulled himself
together while his crew
repaired the car in time
for the late afternoon
qualifying. But after only
a few warmup laps
Morton went off the rac-
ing line and brushed a
tire barrier. Although
not nearly as serious a
crash as he'd suffered
that morning, the acci-
dent ended his qualifying
session.
Since Morton never got
up to full speed during
qualifying, his lap times
placed him at the end of
the 25-car grid for
Sunday's race.
The race, which fol-
lowed the IndyCar event,
was a crash-filled specta-
cle. Morton avoided sev-
eral early-race accidents
and completed five of the
12 laps before touching
wheels with another
racer while attempting
to pass. Again, Morton
wasn't hurt, but his car
was out of action. He
ended with a 17th place
finish.
With no permanent
sponsor, Morton doesn't
know when he'll race
next, but he hopes to
try the Saab Series again
this season. He also
plans to run in the Saab
race during next
year's Detroit Grand
Prix.
"Even though my
results weren't good as
we hoped they'd be, I'm
not disappointed,"
Morton said. "I got out
there. It's a step to ful-
filling a dream." ❑
