Fire Rages
In Galilee

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A Galilee
moshav was evacuated last
week as a vast forest fire
raged over a wide area of the
hilly region, fanned by a hot
Sharav wind with
temperatures in the mid- to
upper 90s.
Moshav Amirim's 300
residents in Upper Galilee
were evacuated, with two
moshavniks rushed to Safed
hospital to be treated for
smoke inhalation.
One pregnant woman was
treated for shock.
The fire, burning up fields,
crops and forests, destroyed
an estimated 1,000 acres of
forest and natural brush in
the popular Nahal Amud
beauty spot.
The air force pressed five
helicopters and three light
aircraft into service, suppor-
ting hundreds of firefighters
and Jewish National Fund
workers. Fire engines from
as far afield as Tel Aviv were
also called to the region.
The helicopters ferried
giant buckets of water
scooped up from Lake
Tiberias to pour over the
blaze.
At least two houses in the
village were destroyed by
the blaze, and the entire
moshav was covered in soot
after firefighters succeeded
in bringing the blaze under
control late in the evening.
Residents suggested that
the fire may have been
started by sparks from
overhead high-tension power
lines and the unusual heat.
It was only one of dozens of
fires which raged
throughout the northern
areas.
Another serious fire broke
out near the Rassco housing
estate in Upper Nazareth,
where local residents blam-
ed local fire brigades for
taking too much time to
reach the blaze.

Italy Passes
Anti-Racist Law

Rome (JTA) — The Italian
Senate has passed a law
against racial, ethnic and re-
ligious discrimination that
was approved last week by
the Chamber of Deputies.
The law, aimed largely at
far-right skinheads, foresees
prison terms of up to three
years for anyone convicted of
spreading racial or ethnic
hatred or prejudice.
It also provides for a period
of community service of up
