Boston (JTA) — Three local
youths were arrested in con-
nection with the desecration
of a Jewish cemetery in
Everett, Mass., that turned
out to have been part of a
wave of anti- Semitic
violence that swept this area
in recent weeks.
The three 19-year-old
Everett men, Paul Flaherty,
Brian Merchant and Edward
Cordwell Jr., were charged
with overturning 100
gravestones and spray-
painting about 20 of them
with swastikas on April 21,
the day after Hitler's birth-
day.
"Happy Birthday Adolph"
was painted on one wall of
the cemetery.
That night Everett High
School and several homes
were spray- painted with
swastikas and a Viet-
namese-owned convenience
store window was broken
and the words "Gooks Get
Out" were painted on the
wall.
The three youths, all of
whom are suspected of being
associated with neo-Nazi
groups, were also charged
with those crimes.
They also took part in a
demonstration on April 22 to
protest the opening of the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum in Washington.
Two of the three later
apologized, claiming it was a
drunken prank, that they
had meant no harm and that
they were sorry.
The incident was the most
highly publicized of several
acts of vandalism that hit
the Boston area in April and
May.
On April 5, windows in the
sanctuary of Brighton's
Temple B'nai Moshe were
broken, and a sign across the
street dedicating a part of
the building to the congrega-
tion's former rabbi was
knocked down and
destroyed. Since Yom
Hashoah on April 18, more
windows have been broken.
On April 20, in Peabody,
Temple Ner Tamid was
covered with anti-Semitic
graffiti, swastikas and the
word "Jude," which is Ger-
man for "Jew."
Early last week, two syn-
agogues in Malden received
letters from the Aryan War
Council, warning that if the
Anti-Defamation League
and the Jewish Defense
League did not "back off the
case concerning the three

youths who desecrated your
cemetery," a very "unplea-
sant situation" would ensue.
The letter, signed by "A
Soldier" from the Aryan
group, said that the teens
were guilty simply of van-
dalism and nothing more.
According to Captain
Richard Aucoin of the
Malden Police Department,
the letter-writers were
under the misconception
that the desecrated
cemeteries belonged to these
temples.
Most recently, in
Haverhill on May 2, a wall
outside the city's high school
was spray-painted with
swastikas and racist
slogans. And in the city's
local cemetery, five
gravestones were overturn-
ed.
The police have not yet de-
termined whether the
various incidents were con-
nected.
But to Leonard Zakim, ex-
ecutive director of the ADL,
there is no question. Though
the same people may not

have committed all of the
acts, the violations are all
strung together with the
same heavy thread:
"At the ADL we view all of
these things together," said
Zakim. "At this point no one
can claim ignorance as a
defense, especially not now,"
he said, referring to the high
level of publicity received by
the cemetery desecration in
Everett.
The JDL has identified
Richard Rivard of Revere, a
remedial- reading teacher at
Everett High School for 19
years, as a member of the
S.S. Action Group, a local
branch of a national neo-
Nazi group.
Mr. Rivard has not denied
being a part of the group,
and evidence, including a
letter in his handwriting,
has convinced officials of his
involvement.
Suspicions as to his role in
Mr. Merchant's, Mr. Flaher-
ty's and Mr. Cordwell's neo-
Nazi education are still be-
ing investigated. Mr. Rivard
is currently on a leave of
