well as for the Tenement
Museum.
Leading the way along
Allen and then Eldridge, Mr.
Snyder stops at one point to
describe a tenement and ex-
plain that with the narrow air
shafts between each building,
these were unhealthy living
quarters.
Soon we arrive at #60
Eldridge. Way above us,
clothes are flapping in the
wind, hanging from the out-
door fire escape. Graffiti is on
the walls, but so is a plaque
that reads: "Ira Gershwin,
born here 12/6/1896." Right
under the date are the words:
"Not for a year, but forever
and a day'."
Across the street, Mr.
Snyder points out, is #19
Eldridge; this was where Ed-
die Cantor was born and
spent his early years. "Why
did someone like Eddie Can-
tor want to get out of the
neighborhood?" Mr. Snyder
asks. "Look at these
tenements, and you'll see
why."

One member of a
tour group was
the grandson of a
famous female
vaudeville star.

We see many more of them
as we walk over to .Canal
Street and then onto East
Broadway. At the corner of
Jefferson, Mr. Snyder shows
us the site of the Educational
Alliance, a settlement house.
"It was a building where im-
migrants could find educa-
tional services and often
theater, too," explains Mr.
Snyder. So this was a place
where budding Jewish vaude-
villians often -got practice.
But they also used the
streets. Pointing to Jefferson,
Mr. Snyder tells us how the
kids on Jefferson Street once
organized a dance competi-
tion between Eddie Cantor
and another Lower East
Sider, Roy Arthur. Mr. Arthur,
already a vaudevillian, had
been parading around the
street, showing off his skills."
Eddie Cantor's friends were
jealous of the attention he
was getting, so they proposed
a dance competition between
the two," relates Mr. Snyder.
When Eddie Cantor danced,
Mr. Arthur was so impressed
that he hired him to join his
tour as a valet, and the enter-
prising Mr. Cantor soon work-
ed his way up to become a
juggler.
Continuing our walk, we
pass the building that was
