SAVE UP TO $200! Katz and Ms. Bronk, in an interview shortly after Mrs. Katz took office. At the organization's centennial convention, held in Chicago in March, a majority of the 1,300 at- tendees were between ages 33 and 50. There was also a stronger presence of women ages 25 through 35 than there had been in the past, said Mrs. Katz. Many younger members are professional women, or recently stopped working in order to raise small children, she said. And there has also been an influx of women who are re- cent retirees. These are wo- men "who come to the organization with tremen- dous skills," said Mrs. Katz. "It takes the organization to new heights. We just need to be ready to move to them," she said. One of NCJW's latest efforts is built around the women and men — but most- ly women — who care not just for children, but for ag- ing parents, as well. They constitute a population which will grow dramati- cally in coming years, demographers say, and NCJW is working to focus attention on their predica- ment. The centerpiece of the effort will be the National Day of the Working Parent, scheduled to take place in hundreds of communities around the country on Sept. 9. In major urban centers, in- cluding New York, Chicago, Washington, Dallas, Atlanta and Boston, as well as hun- dreds of smaller com- munities, NCJW volunteers will distribute 100,000 "Food for Thought" lunch boxes to men and women. Inside recipients will find information on local child- care and elder-care resources. The point, said Mrs. Katz, is to raise the consciousness of employers, government and the grass-roots level about the problem. To make National Day of the Working Parent a real- ity, NCJW enlisted the help of corporate sponsors, which include Marriott Corp., American Express, Conde Nast and Johnson & Johnson. It is the first time that NCJW has worked with cor- porate sponsorship, which is a reflection of the pragmatic approach the organization takes to solving some of the problems of American wo- men.
