Schochet Achievement Awards Are Given To Three Teachers Nira Lev has been named recipient of the Schochet Family Outstanding Teacher Award, and Florence Ziffer and Bea Kriechman will receive Achievement in Teaching Awards. The annu- al teacher award is sponsored by the Frank and Freda Schochet Fund of the Federated Endowment Fund to rec- ognize excel- lence in Jew- ish educa- tion. Director of the Agency for Jewish Education Hebrew Learning Center and the Community Jewish High School Hebrew Department, Mrs. Lev received the $1,000 cash award for her project proposal to develop instruction materials for teaching conversational Hebrew in combination with Jewish and Israeli culture. The materials are geared for teens and adults at the intermediate and advanced levels. Nira Lev In addition to her duties at AJE, Mrs. Lev is associ- ate professor of Hebrew at the Midrasha-College of Jewish Studies. Previous- ly, she taught at Oakland University and the Jewish Community Center. Mrs. Kriechman, who received a $500 award, is retiring after 47 years in Jewish education. She has taught at the Agency for Jewish Education and its forerunner since 1946. She Bea Kriechman also held teaching posi- tions at the Rose Sittig Cohen School, Congre- gation Ahavas Achim, Congregation Beth Aaron and Congregation Beth Achim. Mrs. Kriechman was assistant principal and recently principal at the Adat Shalom Synagogue branch of the AJE. Mrs. Kriechman has conducted study groups for the Beth Achim Sisterhood and taught Hebrew classes for Hadassah. Mrs. Ziffer, who teaches at Akiva Hebrew Day School, also a received cash $500 A award. of teacher first and third grade Hebrew and religious studies, Mrs. Ziffer previ- ously taught at the . AJE's Beth Achim branch and at the Community Jewish High School. She earned a master's degree in special education at Columbia Teachers' College and a B.A. degree at Yeshiva University's Stern College for Women. The Jewish Congregation of the city of Minsk in the republic of Belorus was adopted by the Metro- politan Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues (MDFRS) by resolution of their board of trustees. With this action, the Reform Jewish community of Detroit has committed itself to support the Minsk congregation with the means to provide material, personal and spiritual needs required by this community. James Jonas, president of MDFRS, has appointed Walter M. Stark and Phyllis Strome as co-chair- persons of the committee to co-ordinate this activity. JWV Plans Convention The Jewish War Veterans will award 24 college schol- arships. The $500 scholarship awards program will be held in conjunction with Friday night Sabbath ser- vices 7 p.m. June 25 at the JWV Memorial Home. Other convention activi- ties June 26 will include 9 a.m. services at Beth Achim Synagogue, a 2 p.m. seminar on Veteran bene- fits by national service offi- cer, Irving Keller, and a 7 p.m. dinner-dance at Vladimir's on Grand River.
