federal penitentiary and
insane asylum. Now he is
in solitary confinement in
a federal prison in Illinois.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek called the sentence
"disproportionate and
extreme," as did others
who attended the rally.
Cheryl Miller, an Akiva
Hebrew Day School eighth
grader, said the sentence
smacked of anti-Semitism.
Others agreed.
"Jonathan Pollard was
arrested as an American,
but he was sentenced as a
Jew," said Avi Weiss, Mr.
Pollard's rabbi, who came
in from New York to
attend the rally. "When
are we going to learn from
our black brothers and sis-
ters? They are not afraid

to raise a voice for their
people."
Mr. Pollard's sister,
Carol, criticized the
Jewish community for not
coming to her brother's
aid sooner. Jews are
afraid of sticking up for
their own because they
fear gentiles will accuse
them of harboring "dual
loyalties," she said.

She and Rabbi Weiss
remarked that even newly
appointed Supreme Court
Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg ruled against
reopening Mr. Pollard's
case while serving on the
U.S. Court of Appeals.

"I support many of
Judge Ginsburg's deci-
sions," Ms. Pollard said.
"But not that one." ❑

The Jewish News
Wins Three Awards

STAFF REPORT

The Jewish News won
three awards last week in the
American Jewish Press As-
sociation's annual Simon
Rockower competition for ex-
cellence in Jewish journal-
ism. The paper competed
against Jewish newspapers
with circulations exceeding
15,000.
Staff writer Kimberly

Lifton won first place for ex-
cellence in comprehensive
coverage for coordinating and
writing the "Southfield At
Risk"series that appeared in
December 1991.
The paper won first place

for excellence in overall
graphic design.
Photographer Glenn Triest
won an honorable mention
for a photograph for the "Sa-
cred Art" article on Torah
scribes.
The Rockower competition
covered the period from Rosh
Hashanah 5751 to Rosh -
Hashanah 5752 (1991-92).
The Jewish News' sister

papers also did well in the
competition. The Baltimore
Jewish Times placed in sev-
en writing categories and the
Atlanta Jewish Times placed
in five. ❑
