Jewish Tales Found In Mid-Mediterranean MOLLY AROST STAUB SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS B osnian Jews, Muslim's and Christians living together peacefully — but not in Bosnia- Herzegovina. A recent visit to southern Spain's major city, Malaga, revealed this amaz- ing development at the start of a mid-Mediterranean cruise aboard the Cunard Princess, that stopped at ports not on the usual itinerary. On Malaga's Marques de Larios, the main shopping street of fashionable stores, stands the jewelry shop Expo Oro. Its owner, Meir Hayon, is president of the Communidad Israelita de Malaga, the Jew- ish community of Malaga and its 15-year-old synagogue. He revealed that 1,200 Jews now live on the Costa del Sol. Mostly Sephardim, they ar- rived from Morocco in the 1950s and '60s. Some Ashkenazim emigrated to the area after World War II. Before this time, of course, there had been virtually no Jewish communities since the Inquisition and 20th-century restrictions under the Franco government. Additionally, a number of British Ashkenazim retired here because of the climate and living standard, and another group of Ashkenazic Argentinians migrated because of poor economic con- ditions at home. The Jewish Community's vice president Leon Levy — whose parents came from Seville — enthusiastically described the Bosnian com- munity living in nearby Mi- jas. Antonio Maldonado, its Christian mayor, invited 25 Bosnian families to relocate to nearby Mijas in November 1992. About 50 percent are Sephardic Jews, while the others are Muslims and Christians. That December, the fami- lies arrived and were given jobs — most are professionals: lawyers, journalists, engi- neers and architects. Mr. Levy said Mayor Maldonado, who has an affinity for Jews because he spent months on an Israeli kibbutz, guaran- teed jobs to the new settlers. Despite the ethnic differ- ences tearing the communi- ties apart in Bosnia- Herzegovina, the new resi- dents of Mijas pride them- selves on their ability to live together harmoniously. Mijas, boasting 100 hotels, offers an old, whitewashed village a short drive into the hills above the Mediterra- nean. Visitors at terra cotta- roofed buildings dripping with colorful flowers enjoy N
