Mr. Howard remains
most proud of one category
of graduates — women
entering the communica-
tions field • after going
through tough, personal
challenges.
"We try to make ego
important to them so they
feel self-worth," said Mr.
Howard, who thinks
specifically of a station
manager and a TV anchor,
both working outside of
Michigan. "It's just fantas-
tic because each one is
making a pretty decent liv-
ing, and they're proud of
themselves."
Joe Wade Formicola of
station WWWW is a grad-
uate who remains particu-
larly memorable.
"On the country music
station, the morning man
is Joe Wade Formicola,
voted the top country jock
in America a couple of
years ago," Mr. Howard
said. "He was one of my
first students.
"He came to school, got
his diploma and was one of
our first placements. He
went to work and did some
great things."
In designing the two
types of programs —
broadcasting and electron-
ics — Mr. Howard called
in consultants with indus-
try and university back-
grounds. Advisory boards
are used to keep the tech-
nology as up-to-date as
possible.
The teaching staff has
been selected from those
with both degrees in the
field and work experience.
Arrangements have been
made with local colleges to
allow credits for courses
taken through his school.
The broadcasting cur-
riculum runs 32 weeks,
while electronics runs 48
weeks.
Mr. Howard's interest in
education carries over to
non-work activities as he
supports the Hebrew day
school movement. Al-
though he is not a
Lubavitcher, he likes the
style and supports this
group as well.
At home and relaxing.„-
he enjoys entertainrrient in
keeping with his favorite
interest.
"I like 'Murphy Brown'
and want to be home to
watch it," he said of the sit-
com about broadcasting. 0
