22 years of radio experi-
ence, first as an announcer
and then as a disc jockey.
He has made it a point to
adjust to demands and
change his career,
although some of the
changes were not neces-
sarily the ones he would
have chosen.
His name, for example,
was selected by a market-
ing executive as he transi-
tioned from announcer

roll disc jockey Specs
Howard, working with
music that was far from
his favorite.
He studied his craft at
Allegheny College in his
home state of
Pennsylvania, where he
earned a bachelor's degree
in radio, speech and dra-
matics.
After owning and oper-
ating a radio station in
Pennsylvania, he was
employed by NBC, ABC
and Westinghouse in on-
air positions. In Cleveland,
he was part of the Martin
and Howard radio team. In
Detroit, he worked at
WXYZ and WCAR.
"I always wanted to stay
in the business, and I
thought I could train peo-
ple and go that route," said
Mr. Howard, who wanted
to move on when he felt he
was still successful in his
long-time profession.
Part of his motivation
came from being asked
repeatedly how young peo-
ple could get into broad-
casting.
In 1970, he rented a for-
mer saddlery in Redford to
house his instructional
center, which had only one
studio. Files were kept in
the oven of the building's
small kitchen.
Within six months, he
needed more room and
rented space in the One
Northland Drive building
in Southfield, expanding
from 2,400 to 20,000
square feet with 14 radio
studios, three color TV stu-
dio/control rooms, four off-
line video editing suites
and two electronics labs.
The staff has grown
from two part-time in-
structors and Mr. Howard
to a workforce of 38 full-
time and several part-time
employees in teaching and
operations positions. His
son Jonathan is director of
the school.
