Why are
audiences so
comfortable with
Jewish/gentile
couples?

perceive Jews and gentiles as
being an inter-ethnic match
because the only thing still
truly Jewish about these men
are their names, their hair
and their New York accents.
And in that sense at least,
the assimilation dreams of
those first Jewish movie mak-
ers have come true.
Jews are no longer seen as
being anything but slightly
neurotic Caucasian Ameri-
cans.

is, nobody named O'Reilley or

used to be named Finkelstein.
This is not to say that there
aren't any O'Reilleys ne Finkel-
steins out there. (If there are
any Rockefeller/Finkelsteins
out there and reading this, we
are definitely related: send
money.)
It simply suggests that, if in-

brit, the temptation is to as-
sume that Lilith's ethnic her-
itage was less a well-
thought-out bit of character •
development and more a one-
joke idea.
If Jewish men cannot even
write about the subject they
are most intimate with —
themselves — in anything
but a self-deprecating man-
ner, how can they be expect-
ed to create three-dimen-
sional Jewish women?
The bigger question,
though, is why are television
viewers, who to this day re-
ject most shows dealing with
bi-racial couples, as indicat-
ed by the failure of "The
Robert Guillaume Show,"
"True Colors" and "Murphy's
Law," so comfortable with the
multitude of Jewish/gentile
couples in Nielson's Top 50?.
Maybe because the audi-
ence doesn't perceive them as
really being all that different.
After all, the men men-
tioned above never "do" any-
thing Jewish, beyond a
colorful exclamation or refer-
ence to some obscure culinary
dish.

On seeking to
shed my name,
I was
accommodating
American
values.

ilies took, it probably led them
so far out of the Judaic fold that
they might not even know that
their families had once been
Jewish.
What does this all mean? Ap-
parently in seeking to shed the
name Finkelstein, I was ac-
commodating to American val-

ues. In those days, Benny
Kubelsky became Jack Benny,
Asa Yoelson became Al Jolson,
Sammy Davis became...wait,
that's another story.
The point is, that it was only
much later that my Jewish
identity blossomed and then
and only then would I take
pride in the achievements of a
Jewish scholar, the late chan-
cellor of the Jewish Theological
Seminary, Rabbi Louis Finkel-
stein.
But it has made me more
aware of the power of names,
and for this reason, my wife and
I thought hard and long when
naming our own children. We
named our daughter Mayim
Yael and our son Sheya (deriv-
ative of the prophet Hoshea)
Pardes. Both are Finkelsteins.
My wife and I now have to
help our children construct a
Jewish value system, which, if
we are relatively successful, will
enable our children to take
pride in their names and in be-
ing Jewish.
Now, if you'll permit me, I'd
like to go watch some TV. Some
guy named Seinfeld is on, who,
a generation ago, would have
adopted the name, I don't
know...Dick Van Dyke? 111
