The visit to the 300 acre campus occurred only a few days after the Technion signed an agreement with Russia to launch a student built satellite in 1995. Giora Shaviv, professor of astrophysics, enthralled mission participants with an explanation of the project and exhibited an actual scale model of the satellite. Additionally, participants were able to view the Soviet absorption process directly when recent arrivals from Russia and other states of the former Soviet Union who are now Technion students and professors explained their new work and studies. As the bus left for further travel in the north of Israel, participant Nancy Lash exclaimed, "This visit dramatically illustrates the Technion's critical importance to the State of Israel." 1.
