Yost Rejoins
Council Staff

Beverly Yost

Beverly Yost has rejoined
the staff of the Jewish
Community Council as
Community Relations
Associate. She will be
responsible for the
Council's activities
involving Soviet Jewry
and college issues.
Ms. Yost has twice
before been a member of
the Council's staff. She
was first employed in
1974 as the Program
Resources Coordinator
and then staffed the cul-
ture commission and the
committee on interna-
tional concerns.

Hosts Gathering

Shalom Detroit, the wel-
coming committee of the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit
Women's Division will host
a gathering by the pool for
newcomers to the Detroit
area 1:30 p.m. June 27 at
the home of Sandy and
Alan Schwartz.
The event will include
swimming, snacks, conver-
sation and a presentation
about the community.

Games Night

Summer Classes
At Maple-Drake

The summer session of
enrichment classes at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center will start
the week of June 21.
Classes in pre-ballet and
creative dance are offered
for 3-6-year-olds. Classes
in ballroom dancing,
Country Western line
dance, bridge, ballet and
tap are available for
adults. The Chess Club
will meet every Thursday
at 7 p.m.

Club Chayim, the young
couples' club at Congre-
gation Beth Achim, will
host a games night 7:30
p.m. June 27 at the syna-
gogue.
Refreshments will be
served. There is a charge.

Rabbi Gives
Mitzvot Shiur

Rabbi David Horwitz, a
fellow of the Caroline and
Joseph S. Gruss Kollel
Elyon — the institute for
advanced rabbinic studies
at the Yeshiva University-
affiliated Rabbi Isaac
Elchanan Theological
Seminary in New York
City — will deliver a shiur
(scholarly lecture) in
Southfield, June 26.
Rabbi Horwitz will dis-
cuss "The Rational and the
Ritualistic: Two Para-
digms of Mitzvot" at
Young Israel of Southfield.

Group Focus:
Current Events

The Jewish Community
Center will form a current
events group specifically
designed for men and
women with varying lev-
els of developmental dis-
abilities. Participants will
analyze and discuss local,
national and internation-
al issues and news.
The group will meet bi-
monthly, on Thursday
evenings from 7:30 - 8:30
p.m. at Maple-Drake
beginning July 15. For
further information and

Midrasha Finds
Hebrew Tutors

Midrasha will help to
find tutors for adult
learners who wish to
study Hebrew but can-
not participate in regu-
lar classes.

Sephardim
Hold Brunch

The Sephardic community
of greater Detroit will
hold a brunch 10 a.m.
June 20 at the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center.
The nominating com-
mittee has proposed the
following slate of officers:
president - Shirley S.
Behar; vice president - Eli
Rashty; secretary - Gila
Natan; treasurer - Jacob
David.
Outgoing officers will
be honored. They are:
Albert Katan, Alan
Saltiel, Joseph Tarica.
Services will precede
the brunch at 9 a.m., con-
ducted by Hazan Sasson
Natan. There is a charge

HMC Offers
Docent Training

The Holocaust Memorial
Center (HMC) will start a
docent training session 10
a.m. July 27 at the HMC,
6602 W. Maple Road, West
Bloomfield.
Docents guide tour
groups through the HMC.
They explain the exhibits.
They help to teach others
to respect diversity and
multiculturalism.
The program is coordi-
nated by master docent
Judy Miller, an Agency for
Jewish Education board
member and a veteran
teacher in the Detroit
Public School system.
Participants view videos,

read assigned books and
articles, and share the
experiences of seasoned
docents. A one-on-one
walk-through tour with a
member of the docent
training committee com-
pletes the program.
The training program
can be tailored to meet
participants' needs and
schedules. Future docents
can complete their train-
ing at their own pace.
Once finished, they can
choose the day or days
they would like to serve.

ZOA Forum
Hears Speakers

United States-Israel Re-
lations will be the theme
of the next session of
ZOA's Einstein Luncheon
Forum noon, June 28 at
the Clarion Hotel, 12 Mile
at Orchard Lake, Farm-
ington Hills.
The speaker will be
Edward Charles Levy Jr.,
past president and board
chairman of the American
Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC).
Mr. Levy serves as a
governor of the Jewish
Federation of Metro
Detroit, executive commit-
tee member of the Detroit

Round Table of the
National Conference of
Christians and Jews,
Children's Hospital of
Michigan and the Michi-
gan Cancer Foundation.
He also is an international
trustee of the Center for
Strategic Studies at Tel
Aviv University and a
trustee of the Washington
Institute for Near East
Policy.
Judge Ira G. Kaufman,
chairman of the forum,
will preside. For reserva-
