Hebrew U. Honors Schultz Former Jerusalem (JTA) U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz has been awarded an honorary doc- torate by Hebrew University in recognition of his dedica- tion to human rights and his efforts on behalf of Jewish refuseniks in the former Soviet Union. The former statesman was also honored for his "counsel and support" for the Israeli economic recovery plan of the 1980s and helping to lay the foundations for the resumption of the Middle East peace process. Mr. Shultz, who was given honorary citizenship of Jerusalem, was U.S. secre- tary of state from 1982 to 1989, treasury secretary from 1972 to 1974 and labor secretary from 1969 to 1970. In a brief address, Mr. Shultz said that Israel, with its "tremendous intellectual resources," is ideally posi- tioned to derive maximum benefits from the current age of "information and knowledge." —
