fixtures. The Wood Box, a
ship captain's house from
1709, features beautifully fur-
nished rooms and outstand-
ing cuisine.
Today Nantucket, with a
year-round population of
6,900 which swells to 40,000
in summer, offers 14 houses of
worship — including Congre-
gation Shirat HaYam (Song of
the Sea), which celebrates its
10th anniversary this year.
Island congregants couldn't
recall Jewish residents before
the 1920s. In 1932, Zelda
Zlotin arrived. But, she said,
she and her husband Milton
were too busy working 15-
hour days running their
restaurant to organize the
Jewish community. They
tried teaching their children
about Judaism at home and
lit a chanukiah in their
restaurant, across the room
from the Christmas tree.
In 1947, Sarah and Morgan
Levine settled here, opening
the Fair Winds Craft Guild.
They frequently accommo-
dated 30 for Passover seder,
but Sarah dreamed of a real
congregation. But the inac-
cessibility — it's about a
three-hour ferry ride from
Cape Cod or an expensive
airplane hop — made it
difficult.
Enter Claire and Michael
Maitino, enthusiastic con-
verts to Judaism who run an
antique store, Val Maitino
Antiques. Together with
Sarah Levine, they planned a
Shabbat service, expecting 20
persons — and 150 showed
up.
The congregation was form-
ed in 1983 with a nucleus of
businesspersons and profes-
sionals and now boasts about
150 member family units,
said president Irving Rosen-
thal of Great Neck, N.Y., who
spends five months here an-
nually.
Today the congregation
holds services from Memorial
Day until about a week after
the High Holy Days in the
1809-Second Congregational
Meeting House of the Unitar-
ian Universalist Church — a
white-painted shingle church
with hand-blown glass win-
dows and gilt clock.
It's a pluralistic service. The
High Holy Days, when a
rabbi presides, usually draws
200-300 attendees. "The peo-
ple are out the door," Zelda
Zlotin said. Those who daven
sometimes include Christians
from Harvard's Divinity
School and celebrities includ-
ing members Anne Meara
and Jerry Stiller. One bar
mitzvah has been celebrated
here, and this summer a bat
mitzvah will take place.
Tashlich services are held at
the historic lighthouse.
