dren from such marriages
will end up practicing the

Woven together, this data
creates a disturbing image.
More and more of our sons
and daughters will be enter-
ing into marriages which
have a less and less likely
chance of supporting Jewish_
lifestyles or producing Jew-
ish offspring. A community
with a 70 percent attrition
rate cannot expect to endure
for many generations. The re-
ality of the increase of mixed
marriages has implications
for every aspecf of our com-
munity. It involves more than
which pictures of newly en-
gaged couples should be pub-
lished by this publication (or
others). It has consequences
for each and every one of our
institutions: synagogues, or-
ganizations, community cen-
ters, etc. It has consequences
for our Federation and for all
Jewish charitable causes.
Mixed marriage is not simply
an issue affecting the per
lives of some families
— or even many. Its ultimate
consequences have to do with
the capacity of our commu-
nity to survive to maintain
the level of collective lives
that we enjoy and may take
for granted. A community
with severely diminishing
numbers may lose the capac-
ity to maintain the institu-
tions necessary for a high
quality of collective life. So all
of us are touched by the im-
plications of this series of
studies.
What can we do with our
information? Certainly we
cannot beCome immobilized.
It is not appropriate, as some:
choose, to simply deny the re-
ality of the statistics or of
their implications. We cannot
hide our heads: in the sand.
Some, on the right, imagine
that by withdrawing into
their own enclaves they can
somehow prevent the effect
of Americanization from hav-
ing consequences for their
group. They are mistaken.
The erosion of the institu-
tions that serve our commu-
nity will affect them as well,
as will the reality of inter-
marriage itself. Some, on the
left, imagine that by a vague
program of "outreach" they
can stem or reverse the rav-
